I was fishin at this pond and caught like a 20 to 25 pound snapper or whatever it weight, and just cut my line after i lunged him in. I'm thinking i might wont to eat a couple of these dudes "taste like chicken so i hear". Whats the best way of killin these things after you reel them up?without loosing a finger or two. Theres a bunch in this lake and only want to take a couple.
And how do you clean them? quick and easy way.
I hope its not like trying to kill a turkey!

Snapping Turtle is GOOD!!! make some turtle soup is the best way to cook them up. YUM
What you do is get a 1 inch diameter stick put it in front of it's face to make them snap on. Then pull it's head out of it's shell to expose its neck. Then with one hand while still holding the stick in the other cut it's head off with a machete or an axe.
To clean them just seperate the shell top from bottom collect any eggs that are in there and bury them in the sand if ya want. Then clean out intestines ect. collect all the meat that's inside the shell and cook er up.

I dont have much experience with this but I heard you need to let them purge and get clean from what they eat or you can get pretty wicked diahrea.... I dont know this for sure but i figured its better to be safe then sorry... maybe look into that a little.

the easy way to skin one is take a foot ball needle and just stick it under the skin . than you just air him up . this will peel the skin away from the meat and it comes off in a snap . shell and all .

It was recommended for turkey but it would probably work on turtles too.
Hit it with a steel chair
Then a pile driver followed by a rap in the kisser with a chain that you keep in your tights.

LOL, Once again you have me wiping tears laughing here CE. Did you know that a turtle has 8 different kinds of meat? I was raised eating it. I prefer it over fried chicken, and coming from a southern boy that should tell you something (where is JB when you need him?). Just throw that sucker into a pot of boiling water and he will jump right out of his shell!!! Just kidding there buddy(just thought I would throw that in for the PETA folks) Here is all kinds of links to how to clean, prep and cook turtle:
http://tinyurl.com/lsd5b
The first link will give you the basics of how to get it out of the shell. I just fry it like chicken. If you haven't had fried turtle you haven't lived. It is to die for!
And as far as cleaning them, If they are comming from poluted waters I would leave them alone. But knowing where you live I would bet that they are pretty clean. Give it a try. I bet you like it better than fried catfish!!!

LOL, I have been working and moving!!! I moved... Myself, my brother and my sister. I've had to move all three of us to different locations in the past month. So I haven't had a day off in about a month. Just got my internet turned on last week. To be honest CE I am covered up with work lately. I took a regular full time job plus I am still working doing home repairs for my folks on the houses that they sell. I have three jobs stacked up waiting on me. Don't get me wrong, not complaining, just been busier than heck. Only been fishing once! but I plan on changing that this weekend . Good to see you are still chasing the critters around .

Im not sure you would get the best penetration from a muzzy bowfishing head into a turtle shell.
On that note what head do you guys think would work well on turtle shells. Im thinking maybe one of those explosive tips that Rambo used in First Blood.

I'm betting this turtle thing is overrated. Snappers smell mighty strong. I'm wondering if you can really clean them without getting that smell all the way thru the meat. Especially with all that gunk growing off of them. How much meat is under a turtle shell anyway?

Elk Hunt The really big snappers called LoggerHeads are almost all gone down here in La. and that was from people eating them. I don't really care for turtle but I know a lot of people that eat the heck out of em. You'd have to hear them rave at how delicious a turtle is! I think there is something to it. When I was my youngest son's age I was a master turtle hunter! I didn't kill em I just liked to catch em...I'd keep em for a while at my house then let em go...

JB--
Angie had a better bod, by far, so no, I don't think they were related.
Elk Hunt--
Most people I know put snappers in a clean pond after they catch them to let them "purge" themselves, as mentioned above. Really good turtle meat doesn't smell, to me, but some of it does.

your supposed to do that same thing with any thing like that arent you. Things like crayfish or you downsouth guys crawfish all need to be kept in freshwater for a while to clean themselves out.

All the turtles I ever saw get the axe weren't purged but crawfish that aren't will sometimes have a mud taste. I've noticed a difference from shallow pond or rice field crawfish to the deep water crawfish of the Atchafalaya Basin. Either ones can be outstanding at times but the closer you get to the end of crawfish season the more purging I think is better. Some people will put them in a big wash tub or ice chest or whatever container big enough to cover them with water and pour salt or baking soda in there with them. It loosens up anything on the outer shell to help rinse them off and also it purges them or helps get rid of whatever they are digesting. Once they sit for a while in the salty water, I dump it and rinse them till the rinse water is good and clean. Then it's time to boil, pinch, suck and throw down. I can't wait to make Luv2 some soup with the left over purge water! He likes stuff like that along with Shoe-Fly Pie and Nilla ice cream...

The best soup I've ever had was turtle soup served at Ruth Chris in Richmond Virginia. It beat any soup I've had anywhere including the worlds top restruants in Paris or Venice or even Avon Park Florida (my home town of 3,000). Bob

Got a Ruth Chris right up the road from us Bob and they serve nothing but mouth watering foods. Steaks are unbelievable! Though they are far from inexpensive, you can find higher dollar restaraunts but I don't think you'll find any better cooking. There are a few others down here that can hold there own though.....

When i fish for them i bring a pump-up benjamen pellete gun.All you have to do is shoot it in the head,it takes the starch out of them,if it doesnt kill them outright.Something in my little betty brain tells me that shooting a firearm on the water is not to safe.lol.The noise from the shot wont scare anyone close if you are fishing around docks, homes or other fishermen.Having a mad snapper or more in the boat with you is not very relaxing lol.Have fun in whatever methid you chouse, just be carefull, and safe.pan.

take a sharpening steel and tease the turtle until it bites it then just run the steel into the ground. pull on his tail with vise grips until he is extended then cut off is head. big big warning don't ever pick up the lopped off head with out using pliers even the next day.. the muscle contractions will take your finger off quickly. anyhow cut around the shell and scoop'em out
