Ditto. Texture is just like chicken and taste so mild as to be bland, at least in smaller gar. Great fried, so-so boiled.

nah...gar isn't my fav. to eat. I've never tried Muskey before, but if i have tried gar, i'm prety sure they would taste the same because of what they eat. Kinda gamey taste, but we have different taste buds i guess.

I just happen to come from a part of the deep south where the cooking is probably the best in the whole world..when the Acadian's (cajuns) settled in this area they had to quickly learn to live off the food sources they had here...though cajun style may not be for everyone, it is something to at least try.. I'm trying to tell you guys the best way I can that garfish are very good to eat if you prepare them correctly..as far as road kill stew..I have know clue..we don't eat that stuff..and those of you that have never eaten garfish or crawfish or gumbo and so many other dishes ..you don't know what your missing!! there are a few of my pals in here that like to pick on ol JB about crawfish and all but they don't know their azz from a hole in the ground about all that, when it comes right down to it..don't let them fool you fellows...I gotta go to church with Pam & the kids right now but later on if any of you want to know how to fix up some garfish I will show you!

About the only way I can eat it is in gar patties. And to tell the truth, you put so much ingredients in the patties it covers up the gar taste. I dont like them any other way. Unless maybe if they are in boudin, but there again, covered up in the other ingredients. By themselves they are pretty nasty to me and I eat everything from turtles to crawfish and everything in between.

I'd shoot them and leave them for the snapping turtle as a personal favor.

you are somewhat correct chop because garmeat is a redder meat and I guess that indicates a lot of blood..as with any fish that I have ever cleaned you have got to remove as much blood from the meat as possible and sometimes I have cleaned barfish and river striped bass..they have that blood right bettween the skin and first layer of flesh..I shave that off with my fillet knife..a gar is hard to get enough blood out but get as much as possible by bleeding it. Yes you do have to use more marinating and seasoning to make it taste good but what the heck it is good..I promise you if you ever come over to my place I hope I can get Nelson to fix you some patties, his are the best..you can also make a brown gravy with the patties or you can roll into a ball and make a meatball stew with rice! I have a few recipes if any of you ever want em..bon apetit'..
when you shoot an old rank buck, can you cook it as easily as a little yearling? and will it taste the same..same thing with gar fish..he ain't gonna cooperate in the skillet like a white perch fillet..you got to work on him a bit but it's worth the trouble every now & then and you utilize something that a lot of people just throw away..

If I had to bet JB, me and you are a couple of the few people here that know what a gar patty is. Mom used to make em when I was young. My dad would catch a big one sometimes when they fished nets. My wife said we eat some strange things when she come into the family, now she knows how to cook everything she said was strange to begin with!! Cant beat the cookin down this way!!

Hey Chop! did you tell me you live somewhere around Liberty?
CHOP Response #12 posted 12/30/2006 07:44 PM EST.
Im about an hour to the east of Liberty, and a little more south. I live close to the big city of Columbia. 30 minutes from Hattiesburg.

That's funny... my gar was snow white.

Chop! we aren't that far from one another and I believe i told you that I really like that area around Liberty..I used to go up to a friend of mines camp many years ago and I think that was the Amite river he was on..Amite or Comite..but anyways it was so darn pretty up that way and i use to tear up some bass and bluegill! I guess you can't hardly hunt around there anymore unless you know somebody..I'd like to get with you and come up for a visit and maybe we can figure out a place to hunt together..I have a great friend over in Slidell and I know a few other good old boys in livingston that know your area pretty good! We need to do it while i still can..
