Lying Bowhunter/Bearhunter
by: Hal Schmidt

Keep in mind, that at the time I told this story there were about 20 other bow hunters present. Someone asked about our trip to Canada. So, I told about how they gave us a boat to fish from all day and after an early supper we were taken out to our tree blinds each evening.

Well, from Monday until Thursday we never saw a thing, not even a squirrel, then just about an hour before dark I heard some brush breaking out to the left of me and an enormous black bear waddled into the clearing.

The people that run the hunting camp trap beaver all winter long for the skins and save the carcass for bear bait in the spring, they also save all of their bacon grease. They smear the bacon grease on the trunks of the trees that they use for blinds.

Well, Mr. Bear walked right up to my tree, reared up and sank his claws into the tree trunk and started licking the bacon grease. I drew back and shot him square in the throat and the arrow went in until just the feathers were sticking out. He let out the most terrible roar I've ever heard, then here he comes climbing into the tree after me. I drew back another arrow, the bow string broke and the arrow fell out onto the ground. The bear climbed into the tree with me and ate me!

I dont understand why, but the guys at the archery shop called me some unpleasant names and threatened me with physical violence!! Heck, all I did was answer their question.
